Useful and practical tourist information about the municipality of Altea.

    

Altea is a lovely town located next to Calpe and Alfaz del Pi, 10 km away from Benidorm, and it has the honour of being qualified by important personalities of the world of the art, the politic and the song, as one of the most beautiful localities of the Costa Blanca (Alicante) and of Spain.

   

From its emblematic old centre, with its viewpoint, square and church, slowly descend its narrow streets towards the sea, encountering in its tour many magical corners, shops, galleries, handmade workshops and restaurants. Once you are next to the Mediterranean Sea you can find the promenade, the fishing port and the sports port of Altea.

   

The Old centre of Altea is located on the top of a mound, and has been declared of cultural interest. The Portal Vell, the Santa Bárbara street, the Church Square, the Nuestra Señora del Consuelo Church, which offers one of the most typical images of this locality with its two blue domes, are some of the most famous buildings and streets of the traditional historic centre of Altea.

Altea's Coast. Coves, beaches and Sport ports.

The Bay of Altea, closed on the north by the impressive Morro de Toix, offers along its 8 km of coast an interesting diversification of beaches, coves and cliffs.

  

From north to south are located the Cala de la Barra, a rustic beach with gravel on the boundaries between Calpe and Altea, the Mascarat beach, the Cala de la Barreta (next to the Puerto Deportivo Luis Campomanes) and the Solsida beach. In general they are semi-wild with an rustic aspect, with fine pebbles, which attract you to enter their crystalline waters.

  

The mentioned beaches and coves are followed by La Olla (located between the Portet de L'Olla and Villa Gadea), from which the small islands "L'Illeta" and "L'Illot" emerge, then the Cap Negret on the mouth of the Algar river and the central beach La Roda, with gravel and pebbles, it also has the Blue Flag status and many services such as: parking, shops, children's games area, bars, restaurants, etc.

   

Finally, after the fishing port and the Club Náutico, is the semi-urban and wide Cap Blanch beach. It is a a beach with gravel, easy to find parking place and with an area with restaurants which connect with the Albir beach, ending the coast of Altea on the south.

The Port and the Club Náutico of Altea are located at the foot of the town, on a privileged location which offers protection of the wind and the sea storms. It is also provided with ample facilities with all the necessary for the caring and resting of the boats.

   

The Marina Greenwich sports port of Altea.

The Marina Greenwich sports port, named like this because it is the only sports port in the world which coincides with the Meridian 000º 00'00'' of Greenwich, is another sports port in Altea and one of the most emblematic ones in the Mediterranean Sea. This port offers excellent services and facilities designed for the rest, leisure and comfort of the users.

Water sports in Altea.

The Club Náutico of Altea provides and offers to the lovers of the water sports the possibility of practising them or starting to learn. Among the different offers, the most highlighted are: a sailing school, courses for helmsman, cabin boys and rowing; and sailing, rowing, fishing and diving competitions.

  

During the year, the Club Náutico organises high level sports competitions among which the classic Sailing Regattas from the 200 miles to 2 or the Open Bahía de Altea.

  

Another interesting activity which can be carried out in Altea by the scuba diving amateur, is to discover the seabed of this locality through its diving routes.   

  

Hiking in Altea.

From Altea you can carry out diverse hiking routes such as the Guadalest and Algar rivers or the ones on the natural paradises of Sierra de Bernia and Fonts del Algar, or the Morro Toix ecological path, all of which have an extraordinary beauty.

  

Sports in Altea.

The locality offers facilities and spaces to enjoy of a great variety of sports on land: sports centres, Tennis Club, Golf Club and Riding Club.

  

Tradition and popular festivities in Altea.

The festivities and celebrations in Altea include the characteristic and traditional festivities of the Costa Blanca (Alicante, Valencian Community): Music, dance, religious services, the "Bous al Carrer" bulls spectacles, fire and powder.

  

In Altea takes place a centenary celebration during the San Juan festivities called "l'Abret", where young and old people of the locality carrying a big black poplar from the lower part of the town to the Church Square and then plant it with the only help of four ropes.

  

In August, the "San Roque" and "San Lorenzo" festivities take place. This last one is famous for its spectacular fireworks, with more than 27 years of tradition, and has the characteristic of being one of the few fireworks which are completely started from the sea. It is a very complicated pyrotechnic event, considered one of the most important ones at a tourist level in the summers on the Costa Blanca, and it is a place to innovate for the best pyrotechnics of the world.

  

Another typical festivity in many of the localities of the Costa Blanca, also celebrated in Altea, is the Moors and Christians celebrations. This festivity takes place together with the celebration of the Patronal Festivities of the locality to honour the Santísimo Cristo del Sagrario, during the last week of September.
